Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum) is one of the world’s most popular and adaptable indoor plants. Appearance & Growth Habit
Money Plant is an evergreen climbing vine that develops long, flexible stems capable of trailing, climbing, or cascading depending on how it is grown. Indoors, vines commonly reach between 1 and 3 metres in length, although mature specimens may become considerably longer under favourable conditions.
The leaves are glossy, heart-shaped, and softly pointed, emerging alternately along the stems. Most cultivated varieties display attractive variegation, with marbled patterns of green, cream, yellow, or lime that vary from leaf to leaf. This natural variation ensures that no two leaves are ever quite alike.
In its natural habitat, the plant climbs tree trunks using aerial roots. When allowed to climb a moss pole or support indoors, the leaves often become noticeably larger, demonstrating the plant’s natural growth habit. When grown in hanging baskets, the stems cascade gracefully, softening shelves, bookcases, and elevated containers.
Flowering is extremely rare in cultivated indoor plants. The ornamental value lies almost entirely in the attractive foliage, which remains fresh and vibrant throughout the year.
Growing Conditions
Money Plant thrives in bright, indirect light, where its variegated foliage develops the richest colour. However, one of its greatest strengths is its adaptability making it an ideal beginner-friendly indoor plant. It also grows successfully in lower light conditions, although growth may become slower and variegation less pronounced.
Direct afternoon sunlight should generally be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves. A position near a bright window with filtered light is often ideal.
The plant grows well in a free-draining indoor potting mix that retains some moisture while allowing excess water to escape. Even moisture supports healthy growth, but the soil should be allowed to dry slightly between waterings. Prolonged waterlogging can damage the roots and reduce overall vigour.
Money Plant performs best in warm indoor temperatures between 18°C and 30°C. It appreciates moderate humidity but adapts well to the conditions found in most homes, making it one of the most accommodating indoor foliage plants available.
Care & Maintenance
Money Plant is valued for its uncomplicated care and forgiving nature. Regular watering during active growth encourages lush foliage, but the plant tolerates occasional missed waterings far better than excessive watering. Allowing the upper layer of the potting mix to dry before watering again helps maintain healthy roots.
A balanced liquid fertiliser applied every four to six weeks during spring and summer supports vigorous growth. Feeding can be reduced during autumn and winter when development naturally slows.
The long stems can be lightly pruned to encourage branching and produce a fuller plant. Cuttings root readily in either water or potting mix, making Money Plant one of the easiest houseplants to propagate. Watching roots develop from a simple cutting often becomes one of the most rewarding aspects of growing the plant.
Dust occasionally accumulates on the glossy leaves and can be gently removed with a soft, damp cloth. Clean foliage not only enhances the plant’s appearance but also allows it to make the most of available light.
The plant is generally resistant to pests and diseases, although mealybugs or spider mites may occasionally appear if conditions become excessively dry.
It should be noted that Money Plant contains calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept out of reach of pets and young children, as ingestion may cause irritation.
